How to invite men? Project Patron - the case study of engaging men in the areas of civic, public and private life which needs their deeper participation Abstract The support of engagement of men in the areas of civic, private and public life which showing the lack of their involvement becomes a topic in the last decade on the level of EU and some national states. But there is just little social research focused on the practical ways how to support the engagement of men in these areas. This paper offers the view from perspective of the studies of civil society - which is especially focused on the motivations to volunteering - combined with the perspective of the studies of men and masculinities. The core of this paper is a case study of the project Patron in which the adult men creates friendly-based relationships with the young men from the institutional care and help them to manage the leaving of this care to the "real life". The aim of this research is analyze the motivation of these men which leads to their participation on this project - mainly in the relations to the experience of manhood and masculinity. Outwit, Outplay, Outlast: The Cultural Study of the Reality TV Phenomenon Survivor

This bachelor thesis is occupied with the phenomenon of the reality TV show Survivor (CBS, 2000). This cultural essay examines the historical development of the reality TV genre. Further, it studies cultural meanings of the reality TV show Survivor, such as a social darwinism, rituals, a life in a community or a voting drama. The main part deals with possibilities of the representation of masculinity in television. Multiple masculinities are analyzed by using the methodology of men's studies, especially through the perspective of the hierarchy of masculinities and the hegemonic masculinities by Raewyn Connell, and through the concept of the mutilated man by Elisabeth Badinter. The final case study is focused on the representation of nonhegemonic masculinities in reality TV show Survivor.

"Pole dance teaches femininity, but it can be incredibly masculine": A gender analysis of the pole dance phenomenon

In sport, as in society, men and women face different expectations related to their gender roles. This also applies to pole dance, which is a sport dominated by women and is generally perceived as feminine. In recent years, however, it has become more and more popular among men. As a result, ingrained stereotypes about the presence of men in pole dance, and about the sport itself, are possible to change. Nevertheless, what is the relationship between gender and the self-presentation of dancers, and to what extent are they themselves involved in reinforcing, reproducing, and breaking down gender stereotypes within this community? This bachelor thesis observes doing gender in pole dance and aims to answer these questions. The work draws on the the theory of West and Zimmerman, who describe an impact of gender expectations on individual behavior and thus the process of doing gender. For a detailed understanding of this phenomenon, data were collected through qualitative semi- structured interviews. Those were realized with six male communication partners and four female partners, who actively participate in pole dance and have several years of experience performing. Toxic Masculinity in Live Action Cinematography: The Big Bang Theory Case Study

This thesis is concerned with expressions of toxic masculinity in television acting, illustrated on the case study of the television show The Big Bang Theory. This work sets the term toxic masculinity in the context of masculinity studies and draws on the theory of hegemonic masculinity formulated by the Australian sociologist Raewyn Connell. Her theory assumes the existence of multiple, hierarchically ordered masculinities, with hegemonic masculinity - considered by some authors tobe synonymous with toxic masculinity - on top. This work also surveys the history of the representation of the male hero from the early days of American cinema up to the present, as the empirical section deals primarily with an American television show. Special emphasis is put on the "nerd" character, who represents non- hegemonic masculinity and thus does not tend to be associated with expressions of toxic masculinity, although he is also guilty of this behavior. The aim of this thesis was to use qualitative content analysis to identify manifestations of toxic masculine behavior by the nerd characters of the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory and to determine how this behavior differs from that of the "jock" character, an embodiment of hegemonic masculinity. Petr Pavlík, Ph.D. Praha 2013 ABSTRACT This work is an attempt to contribute to the development of men's studies as a relevant academic field, which still does not have sufficient background in the Czech Republic. It captures work of the most visible so-called men's organization in CR - the League of Open Men (LOM). Qualitative content analysis based on feminist tradition includes data collected from interviews and thematic articles of LOM's representatives, and especially data from my own interview with Václav Šneberger, one of the organization's founders. The aim of analysis was to clarify ideological basis, values and theoretical concepts which LOM implicitly uses, to explore its relationship to feminist movement and so-called women's organizations, and also to find out its understanding of masculinity/ies and the way in which LOM discursively works with this concept of gender. The analysis revealed that although LOM presented itself as non-academic and non-gender organization which has no ideologies, theoretical basis or definitions and instructions in the "right manhood", it is more a purposeful strategy concealing the fact that...

Different positions and roles of men and women in society

The Bachelor thesis deals, as its name suggests, with the diferent roles of men and women in the society. The theoretical part of this work is thematically focused on the diferences of the individual sex and the problems of the gender roles, along with the disorders of gender. This part also deals with diferent roles of men and women in the labour market. These diferences are described as diferences of average wages, jobs, profesional development and segragation of work. The practical part of the Bachelor thesis includes own research conisting of opinion of the society on the selected questions relating to problems of gender. The technique of an questionnaire was used to obtain the data. The obtained data were analysed later on and aranged into tables and graphs.
